P0726 - Toyota

This code means the TCM (Transmission Control Module) or ECM is receiving an invalid, erratic, or out-of-range signal from the engine speed input sensor (often the crankshaft position sensor or input/turbine speed sensor, depending on the vehicle). The sensor data is crucial for transmission shift timing and torque converter operation.

Possible Causes:

1. Faulty engine speed sensor (crankshaft position sensor or input speed sensor)
2. Loose, damaged, or corroded wiring/connectors in the sensor circuit
3. Faulty reluctor ring / tone wheel (missing, damaged teeth)
4. Signal interference (electrical noise)
5. Faulty ECM/TCM (rare)

Symptoms:

1. Harsh or delayed gear shifting
2. Transmission stuck in limp mode
3. Tachometer not working or fluctuating
4. Engine stalling or hesitation
5. Check Engine Light ON

Fixes:

1. Inspect and test the engine speed sensor (resistance, voltage, waveform).
2. Check wiring/connectors for corrosion, loose pins, or damage.
3. Inspect the reluctor ring / tone wheel for damage or misalignment.
4. Replace faulty sensor if necessary.
5. Clear codes and perform a road test.
