P0784 - Toyota

This code means the Transmission Control Module (TCM) detected a problem during the 4th to 5th gear shift. It usually points to an issue with the solenoids, valve body, or internal transmission components that control this gear change.

Possible Causes:

1. Low, dirty, or overheated ATF (automatic transmission fluid)
2. Faulty shift solenoid D (controls the 4–5 gear shift)
3. Clogged or sticking valves in the valve body
4. Worn or slipping clutch packs/bands for 5th gear
5. Damaged wiring, corroded connectors, or poor grounds
6. Faulty Transmission Control Module (TCM/ECU) (less common)

Symptoms:

1. Transmission will not shift into 5th gear
2. Harsh, delayed, or slipping shift between 4th and 5th
3. Transmission stuck in limp mode (limited gears)
4. Check Engine Light (CEL) or Transmission Warning Light ON
5. Reduced fuel economy at highway speeds

Common Fixes:

1. Check ATF fluid – level, color, smell (replace if burnt/dirty).
2. Test shift solenoid D – replace if faulty.
3. Inspect wiring/connectors – repair shorts, opens, or corrosion.
4. Check valve body – clean or replace if valves are sticking.
5. Inspect internal components – clutch packs, bands, and drum wear.
6. Reflash or replace TCM if software or module failure is confirmed.
