Fault code P1702 is another automatic transmission–related DTC, and like P1701, its exact meaning depends on the manufacturer.
1. Ford / Mazda / Jaguar / Land Rover:
P1702 – Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) Signal Error / TRS Out of Self-Test Range
2. Nissan / Infiniti:
P1702 – Automatic Transmission Selector Lever Switch Signal Fault
3. General (OBD-II):
P1702 – Transmission Range Switch Circuit Malfunction
1. Faulty or misadjusted Transmission Range Sensor (TRS / neutral safety switch).
2. Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring/connectors between TRS and TCM/ECM.
3. Worn gear selector mechanism or linkage misalignment.
4. Internal TCM fault (rare).
1. Check Engine Light or transmission warning light.
2. Hard or delayed gear engagement.
3. Vehicle may start only in neutral or not start at all.
4. Transmission may enter limp mode.
5. Incorrect gear indication on dashboard.
1. Check gear selector operation – ensure it aligns correctly with the indicated gear.
2. Inspect and clean TRS connector for water, dirt, or corrosion.
3. Test TRS with a multimeter (voltage/resistance across ranges).
4. Check wiring continuity between TRS and TCM.
– If faulty, replace or adjust TRS.
– If issue persists, check for TCM update or replacement.
