P174D - Skoda

This code is triggered when the clutch temperature in the DSG transmission exceeds the safe limit, typically due to:
1. Excessive slipping
2. Prolonged stop-start driving
3. Mechanical fault in the clutch pack or mechatronics
4. Low or degraded transmission fluid

Symptoms:

1. Gear slipping or jerky shifting
2. Warning light or transmission overheating message
3. Limp mode activation
4. Delay in gear engagement
5. Possible burning smell from transmission area

Common Causes:

1. Worn out dual clutch system
2. Faulty or miscalibrated mechatronic unit
3. Overheating due to clutch drag or excessive slipping
4. Low or dirty DSG oil
5. Faulty clutch temperature sensor (built into the mechatronics unit)

Recommended Fixes:

1. Allow the transmission to cool, clear the code and observe
2. Scan with VCDS/ODIS or advanced diagnostic tool for live clutch temperature readings
3. Check and replace DSG oil and filter (if overdue)
4. If clutch is slipping, recalibrate or replace the clutch pack
5. Inspect or replace mechatronic unit if temperature reading is false or intermittent
6. Perform a DSG Basic Settings/Adaptation via VCDS after repairs

Important Note:

Driving with P174D active for long periods may permanently damage the clutch or mechatronic system, leading to expensive repairs.
