P1783 - Ford

This code sets when the Transmission Control Module (TCM) / PCM detects that the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) has exceeded the safe operating temperature limit.

Symptoms

1. Transmission Overheat Warning light (if available)
2. Harsh or erratic shifting
3. Transmission may go into fail-safe / limp mode
4. Burning smell from ATF
5. Reduced power / slipping gears
6. In severe cases: complete transmission failure

Common Causes

1. Low transmission fluid level
2. Dirty / burnt / contaminated ATF
3. Clogged or failing transmission cooler
4. Malfunctioning cooler lines (restricted flow)
5. Faulty transmission fluid temperature sensor
6. Heavy towing or extreme driving conditions
7. Internal transmission failure (clutches slipping, excessive friction)

Diagnosis Steps

1. Check ATF level & condition – low, dirty, or burnt fluid is the #1 cause
2. Inspect cooler & cooler lines – make sure ATF is circulating properly
3. Check transmission fluid temperature sensor with a scan tool (compare actual vs. commanded temp)
4. Inspect for overheating causes – blocked radiator, towing overload, fan malfunction
5. Check internal transmission operation if overheating persists after fluid & cooling system checks

Possible Repairs

1. Top up or replace ATF + filter (use correct spec fluid)
2. Flush and clean cooler & lines
3. Replace transmission fluid temperature sensor if faulty
4. Repair / replace cooler or radiator if blocked
5. Address internal transmission issues (slipping clutches, pump failure)
6. Ensure correct driving conditions (avoid overload/towing without extra cooling)
