P17E8 - Volkswagen

This code indicates that the clutch 1 (usually responsible for odd gears: 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th) has reached its wear limits, and adaptation cannot be completed. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) cannot adjust further to compensate for the worn clutch.

Common Symptoms:

1. Jerky or harsh gear shifts (especially in 1st/3rd/5th gears)
2. Gear slipping or RPM surging
3. Clutch noise or vibration
4. Transmission warning light / PRNDS flashing
5. Vehicle may enter limp mode
6. Basic Settings (adaptation) fails during DSG calibration

Common Causes:

1. Excessively worn clutch pack (Clutch 1)
2. Failed or weak clutch actuator
3. Faulty or unresponsive mechatronic unit
4. Excessive clutch dust or contamination inside the gearbox
5. DSG oil degradation (less likely but contributes to overheating)

Recommended Fixes:

1. Perform a full clutch wear check using VCDS/ODIS (see “Clutch Deviation Value”)
2. If clutch wear is beyond limits, replace the dual clutch pack
3. Check and clean DSG system and replace fluid + filter if needed
4. Inspect the mechatronic unit for actuation errors or hydraulic pressure loss
5. After replacing clutch:
– Perform Clutch Adaptation / Basic Settings using a diagnostic tool
– Clear codes and test drive
