P189C - Skoda

This code indicates that the clutch temperature has reached a critical limit, triggering the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) to restrict gearbox functions to prevent damage. This typically puts the car into limp mode or disables gear engagement temporarily.

Common Symptoms:

1. Transmission warning light
2. Jerky or slipping gears
3. Limp mode activation
4. Car refuses to engage gear
5. Overheating warning
6. Delayed or no response from transmission

Common Causes:

1. Worn or slipping clutch pack
2. Excessive heat from stop-and-go traffic or aggressive driving
3. Low or contaminated DSG oil
4. Failing mechatronic unit (sensor inside may misread temperature)
5. Faulty temperature sensor (integrated into mechatronic unit)

Recommended Fixes:

1. Let the transmission cool down and clear the fault temporarily
2. Use VCDS/ODIS or an advanced scan tool to monitor clutch temperature and confirm live readings
3. Check/replace DSG fluid and filter
4. If the issue persists, inspect the clutch pack for wear or damage
5. Replace or reprogram the mechatronic unit if it fails to control or read temperature correctly
6. Perform DSG Basic Settings / Clutch Adaptation after repair.
