P0894 - Land Rover

This code is related to the automatic transmission and is set when the Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Engine Control Module (ECM) detects excessive slipping inside the transmission. It indicates that one or more internal transmission components (such as clutches, bands, or torque converter) are slipping beyond the normal range. The TCM compares the input shaft speed and output shaft speed; if the ratio doesn’t match the expected gear ratio, it assumes there is slippage.

Possible Causes

1. Low or contaminated transmission fluid
2. Worn or damaged clutch packs
3. Faulty torque converter
4. Hydraulic pressure problems (weak pump, leaking seals, blocked passages)
5. Defective solenoids (pressure control or shift solenoids)
6. Worn bands or other internal mechanical damage
7. Faulty transmission control module (rare)

Symptoms

1. Transmission slipping (engine revs but vehicle speed doesn’t match)
2. Harsh or delayed shifts
3. Overheating transmission
4. Check Engine Light (CEL) / Transmission warning light
5. Poor fuel economy

Diagnosis & Fix

1. Check transmission fluid – level, color, and smell (burnt fluid = internal damage).
2. Scan live data – compare input vs output shaft speed.
3. Inspect solenoids and valve body for blockages or sticking.
4. Hydraulic pressure test – to confirm pump or internal leakage issues.
5. Inspect clutch packs and bands (requires transmission teardown if fluid is burnt/metallic).
6. Repair or replace faulty components – solenoids, valve body, torque converter, or internal rebuild depending on findings.
