P0749 Fault Code in Ford: Causes, Symptoms, and Fixes

This code indicates that the Pressure Control Solenoid A is not operating consistently — sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) detects irregular or unstable hydraulic pressure when the solenoid is commanded to activate.

Common Causes:

1. Intermittent electrical connection
2. Failing pressure control solenoid (A)
3. Contaminated transmission fluid
4. Low/incorrect fluid level
5. Valve body sticking
6. Faulty transmission pump (less common)
7. TCM/ECM issue (rare)

Symptoms:

1. Harsh or erratic gear shifts
2. Intermittent slipping or delayed shifting
3. Vehicle may go into limp/safe mode
4. Transmission overheating under load
5. Check Engine Light (CEL) ON intermittently

Diagnosis & Fix:

1. Check ATF fluid → Level, color, smell (replace if burnt/dirty).
2. Inspect wiring & connectors → Especially at the transmission harness.
3. Wiggle test → Move wiring while monitoring live data to catch intermittent drops.
4. Solenoid test → Check resistance, energize solenoid to confirm it clicks properly.
5. Valve body inspection → Look for sticking valves or debris.
6. Replace solenoid A if confirmed faulty.
7. Update/repair TCM if electrical is fine but issue persists.
