P0796 - Mercedes

This code means the Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected that Pressure Control Solenoid “C” is not operating within expected parameters — it may be stuck in the off position, slow to respond, or unable to regulate hydraulic pressure properly. This solenoid controls the flow and pressure of transmission fluid to enable smooth gear shifts.

Possible Causes:

1. Pressure control solenoid “C” stuck or faulty
2. Contaminated or burnt transmission fluid
3. Valve body blockage or sticking valves
4. Damaged or corroded wiring/connectors
5. Internal transmission mechanical problem
6. Faulty TCM (rare)

Symptoms:

1. Harsh, delayed, or erratic shifts
2. Transmission slipping
3. Stuck in limp mode
4. Check Engine Light or Transmission warning light on
5. Poor fuel economy

Quick Diagnosis:

1. Confirm P0796 with scanner
2. Check transmission fluid level & condition
3. Inspect wiring/connectors to solenoid “C” for damage or corrosion
4. Test solenoid resistance and operation (compare to spec, usually 12–30 Ω)
5. Inspect valve body for debris or sticking valves
6. If electrical checks are good, consider hydraulic/mechanical inspection

Quick Repair:

1. Replace faulty pressure control solenoid “C”
2. Repair or replace damaged wiring/connectors
3. Service transmission fluid and filter
4. Clean or repair valve body if contaminated
5. Update TCM software if applicable
6. Clear codes and road test
