P0762 Fault Code in Mercedes: Causes, Symptoms, and Fixes

Code P0762 indicates that Shift Solenoid “C” in the automatic transmission is stuck in the “on” position, meaning it’s constantly engaged and not switching off when commanded by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Common Causes:

1. Faulty Shift Solenoid C
2. Contaminated or low transmission fluid
3. Internal transmission failure (valve body stuck)
4. Wiring issues (shorts, corrosion, damaged harness)
5. TCM or PCM malfunction

Symptoms:

1. Harsh or delayed shifting
2. Transmission stuck in a gear (limp mode)
3. Poor acceleration or fuel economy
4. Illuminated Check Engine Light
5. Jerky or unpredictable gear changes

How to Diagnose & Fix:

1. Scan for codes – Check for related solenoid codes (P0760–P0765)
2. Check transmission fluid – If it’s dark, burnt, or low → flush or replace
3. Inspect wiring/connectors to the transmission/solenoids for damage
4. Test solenoid C (electrically and mechanically if possible)
