P173E - Skoda

This code indicates that the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) attempted to perform a clutch adaptation (basic settings) but failed. It usually occurs after:
– Clutch replacement
– Mechatronic unit replacement
– DSG fluid service
– Battery disconnect or module reset

Symptoms:

1. Gear slipping or jerking
2. Hard or delayed shifting
3. Limp mode activation
4. DSG warning light / PRNDS flashing
5. Failed basic settings via VCDS or ODIS

Common Causes:

1. Incorrect or incomplete clutch adaptation procedure
2. Worn or misaligned clutch pack
3. Faulty mechatronic unit
4. Low or dirty DSG oil
5. Faulty clutch actuator
6. Software mismatch or corrupted DSG settings

Recommended Fixes:

1. Repeat clutch adaptation via:
– VCDS (Basic Settings → Clutch Adaptation)
– ODIS if available
2. Ensure DSG oil is clean and at correct level
3. Check clutch wear values — if wear is near limit, replace the clutch
4. If adaptation still fails, inspect or replace the mechatronic unit
5. Perform a full reset (clear adaptations) before retrying
